Building for Community
To celebrate the sacred and historical space of St. Adalbert
To build community with all stakeholders
To promote the identity of St. Adalbert as a Polish Mexican cultural site for the people of Chicago
The St. Adalbert Church Preservation Society had been organized to ensure that the church remain as an intact sacred space, preferably Catholic. The preservation of this historic place will allow those seeking private time with God to enter a space that will allow them to experience not only the important holidays and ethnic feast days of the former parishioners ; both Mexican and Polish, but to allow any and all who seek contemplation and prayer to enter. St. Adalbert was able to go across many borders and preach , we strive to continue that mission of inclusivity.
The St. Adalbert Preservation Society will have the whole property of St. Adalbert; the rectory, convent, the parking lot and the school building. We will be involved in providing the community of Pilsen with programs for cultural enrichment and any other needed projects as proscribed by the community.
The present church building , dedicated in 1914, was designed by Henry J. Schlacks, a renowned church architect, and has served as a beacon of hope and peace in Pilsen for one hundred and two years. Its massive structure and inspiring interior, leave one with a sense of awe. Its historic significance is priceless and its architectural significance enriches all of Chicago. Should this building be lost, it will be major loss to all of Chicago.
Daily and special Friday night vigils to make the community aware of the continued presence of the faithful of St. Adalbert.
We helped secure the landmarking of church building of St. Adalbert with the efforts of stakeholders and especially the help of Preservation Chicago.
